Spitbank Fort, somewhere in the Solent between Portsmouth and the Isle Of Wight.
Originally built, along with its sisters No-Mans Fort and Horse Sand Fort, by Lord Palmerston in the middle of the 19th century, their primary purpose was to defend Portsmouth against invasion from the France of Napoleon III .
The images illustrate a departure by catamaran on a return to Portsmouth. The final image below shows the three forts set in a triangle across the entrance to the Solent and shortly thereafter Portsmouth harbour itself.
Currently working between Spitbank and No-Mans Forts , I shall be adding further images as I get the time to gather them and get them collated.
